I'm not sure what I think of this.. Having only been to one of the shows - in 2000 which I enjoyed immensely (I worked at Io Interactive and we were there to demo Hitman. We got to see the first batch of PS2 games, and the glorious Dreamcast in action too - and lets not forget the boothbabes..). It seems most of the really big players have their own shows now anyway, and maybe it will also mean that there'll be less disturbance for the developers who are usually called upon to make special E3 demos.. Still, it feels a bit sad somehow, probably because we had plans of one day showing WOF at E3.. =/
